Emperor Goose (Anser canagica)
IUCN status: The emperor goose is classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.
The range of the emperor goose centres on the Bering Sea in the North Pacific Ocean. It breeds in Arctic and sub-Arctic Alaska and along the north-eastern coast of Russia.
The emperor goose feeds on grasses, berries and sedge leaves while at its inland breeding grounds, but feeds on algae, seaweeds, clams and mussels while on the coast during winter.
One to eight eggs are laid in a shallow depression in the ground lined with down, feathers and dead vegetation. The female is solely responsible for incubating the eggs, which hatch after 24 to 25 days.
